Body and Soul

Dear Mr Eggen,
I am curious to know what you think of this quote:

"In all his trials he felt encouraged, and sometimes even upborne by a secret force within.  The soul helps the body, and at certain moments uplifts it.  It is the only bird which sustains its cage."
(Les Miserables, 'The Excellence of Misfortune', section II, speaking of Marius)

It seems here that Victor Hugo is assuming the body and soul are separate, but can work together.  What do you think?
Sincerely,

Catherine van Kampen
