December 2018

Dear Mr Eggen,
This will be one of my last letters to you, I think. I have reread some of my letters to you from late 2017 and throughout 2018. I think it may be a good idea to summarize some of the main thoughts.
     1. Alberta's parents are worthy of your trust, not your wariness.  You can relax. You can reverse your legislation that assumes the worst of this province's parents. Bill 24 can be fixed. Take a deep breath. Let Children's Services do their job ( saving kids at risk of parental violence or negligence) and just focus on education.

2. There will be diversity in the way children are educated about sexual matters because each family is unique. You are not actually doing us a favor by trying to create and enforce a "one size fits all" program of sexual education. Diversity is a word you like, I think. So why can't a Christian view of sexual ethics be part of your governments much-touted diversity?

3. Catholic schools are good. It's good that they are funded by the government and that they are allowed to be distinct from public schools in their teaching. Parents clearly appreciate this option as the enrollments remain high.

4.  Christian belief, and the Catholic faith in particular, is a beautiful thing.  I believe this needs to be said because there is a deep cynicism in our age regarding Christianity. Many believe it is an embarrassment to call someone a Christian or to claim that identity in public. The cynicism expresses a belief that we now know better than the superstitions of Christendom and that secular humanism can relieve us of our ignorance. Well, I reject this view.  I reject it being taught as truth in any educational setting.  Though you may feel enlightened,  Mr Eggen, you currently sit in darkness.  This gloom is caused by the extinguishing of a system of belief and morality called Christianity.  You are attempting to hide the luminous.  Faith in God shows the way forward.  Ideas of education that necessarily exclude God are absolutely not going to improve us.

As the days of winter slowly begin to lengthen, I pray that the Christ child's love and hope dawn in you.  May your family and work be blessed.   May God bless you and protect you.
    Sincerely,

Catherine van Kampen
